Introduction to Apostle’s Missionaries

Apart from Paul’s missionary journeys, the journeys of the Twelve Apostles are not covered in the bible. However, they were recorded by the Greek Orthodox Church and can be found in “The Great Synaxaristes of the Orthodox Church”, published by places such as the Holy Apostles Convent, Buena Vista, Colorado.

The Apostles

Jesus appointed:

  • Andrew and his brother Peter
  • James the son of Jebedee and his brother John. To both he gave the surname Boanerges,
    that is, “Sons of Thunder”
  • Philip
  • Nathanael (also known as Bartholomew)
  • Thomas
  • Matthew and his brother James (the sons of Alphaeus)
  • Simon the Canaanite (who was called the Zealot)
  • Jude (also known as Thaddaeus or Judas) the brother of James, both sons of Joseph
  • Judas Iscariot (who would later betray him).

Judas Iscariot was replaced by Matthias [Acts 1:26]

The flowchart below might help you to see how the Apostles and relatives are connected. The Apostles are shown in blue. The chart is my best guess using my available resources. You can click on it to see a larger version.
